About this work

Landscape sketch showing a view of Mt. Desert Island, Maine, from nearby Sutton Island looking northeast. The atmosphere and landscape are suffused with a warm, rosy light from rising or setting sun (also a product of the brick colored ground used in this and other works from the period). The hills of Mt. Desert are visible at left with a rocky shoreline in the foreground. Light, scattered clouds throughout the top portion of the composition. Three boats with white sails glide upon the water at a distance.
