mid-16th century · Medium: silk on linen Technique: selected warps and wefts of the linen plain weave fabric wtihdrawn, leaving a 1/16 of an inch square grid for needlework; natural linen darned into solid pattern areas; red silk wrapped around the grid and pulled tight for an openwork background.
