How are these two vessels (1998.32 and 2020.192) related? The taller vessel in this case was made over 4,500 years ago in Japan during the Jōmon period. The era was named for the cord patterns appearing on some of its ceramics, including this one, which also has a dramatically shaped rim. The blue-green container was made by artist Okabe Mineo (say: oh-kah-bae me-nae-oh) in 1968. It is from his Jōmon series, inspired by archaeological discoveries happening in Japan during the 1950s. While some pieces in Okabe’s series have cord patterns, others, like this one, highlight the rippled rims. Think about a time you made something new. What inspired you?
