About this work
The figure in the drawing wears Whistler's distinctive broad-brimmed hat, but Whistler might have used Delannoy as a model. After his return to Paris, Whistler completed an etched title page for the "French Set" based on this drawing, in which the artist figure is labeled "James Whistler." But Whistler was dissatisfied with the etching and destroyed the plate. The only known impression of the discarded title page is in the British Museum.
