About this work

Whistler did not complete every pastel he began, and he sometimes reused drawing paper. An earlier drawing of a figure in front of a high-arched doorway is visible in the center of this sheet. In this drawing, Whistler attempted to unify the composite drawing by scumbling the colors in the sky and water.
