About this work
Memling's monumental composition belongs to the earliest formulations of the theme north of the Alps and has found diverse followers in Early Netherlandish and Early German painting. Van Regteren Altena (1966) refers to Geertgen tot Sint Jans (private collection, Amsterdam) and the Master of the Holy Kinship (Nuremberg, Germanisches Nationalmuseum, Inv. Gm 28); Wallen (1983) emphasizes the afterlife of Memling's Jerome into the time of Jan van Hemessen.
