About this work
Depicted is the tragic outcome of a story told by Ovid (Metamorphoses, VII, 661–865): Cephalus laments the death of his wife Procris, whom he accidentally killed with an arrow while hunting. After a long absence, Cephalus had returned home and wanted to test the fidelity of his wife. He disguised himself and courted her. When she yielded to him, he revealed his true identity. Yet they reconciled.
