About this work
In 1585/87 Basilius Amerbach inventoried the panel as Grünewald ("Item vfferstend Christi in die nacht sampt drei liechter Mathis von Aschenburg arbeit."; see Exhib. Cat. Basel 1991, Contributions) and lent it from February 16 to March 11, 1587, to the painter Hans Bock, as evidenced by the petition letter of the latter preserved in the Basel University Library (Mscr. Ki.Ar.229) with annotations regarding the outgoing and incoming of Amerbach (Landolt 1978).
