About this work
The two portrait panels Inv. 80 and 81 are matching pairs. The cutler Melchior Hornlocher (1539–1619) married Katharina Aeder (1545–1629), daughter of the mint master, in 1563. Coming from the artisan class, he quickly rose through the ranks of the city council, culminating in the office of mayor in 1609. His appointment as a city councillor in 1576 may have prompted the commission for these portraits.
