About this work
The provenance and almost identical image dimensions as the "Mountain Landscape with Waterfall" (Kunstmuseum Basel, Inv. 96) suggest that these paintings are pendants. A preparatory drawing for the painting is held by the Print Room of the State Museums in Berlin (Inv. SZ 62; Hans Holenweg and Franz Zelger: Arnold Böcklin. Die Zeichnungen, ed. Schweizerisches Institut für Kunstwissenschaft, Basel: Friedrich Reinhardt Verlag, 1998, No. 155).
