About this work
The work comes from the collection of Harry Graf Kessler (1868–1937). In 1908, Kessler traveled to Greece with Aristide Maillol. He supported Maillol through purchases of works and owned over forty plastic and graphic works by the sculptor before 1914, constituting the largest collection of the artist. In addition to "Le coureur cycliste," he ordered the relief "Le désir" and the figure "Méditerranée" from Maillol and "supervised" their execution almost daily in the studio over several weeks. (Walter 2001, p. 77).
