Die Landschaftsdarstellung entstand in Collioure, einem Fischerdorf am Fusse der Pyrenäen an der westlichen Mittelmeerküste, wo sich Matisse zwischen 1905 und 1914 regelmässig für längere Zeit aufhielt.
