About this work
The representation refers to the story of the hunter Actaeon, who surprises the goddess of the hunt, Diana, while bathing and is transformed into a stag by her as punishment. Later, he is eaten by his own dogs, who no longer recognize him. Actaeon is visible here without dogs in the back left. In the Kunstmuseum, the painting was previously attributed to the school of Ludovico Carracci. However, there is no comparable work in Carracci's oeuvre.
