About this work
The sitter is Clémence Tréhot (1843–1926), lover and life partner of Jules Le Cœur (1832–82), an architect who, after the tragic death of his first wife and their child in 1863, decided on a career as a painter. It is not precisely known when Renoir and Jules Le Cœur met; however, it is certain that they knew each other by 1864.
