About this work
The Austrian painter Michael Wutky stayed in Rome between 1772 and 1785 and again from 1795 to 1801, from where he frequently traveled to Naples. He became acquainted with the English ambassador and connoisseur of arts and natural sciences Sir William Hamilton and climbed the Vesuvius with him during the great eruption of 1779. Wutky made a sketch of the Vesuvius crater there, based on which he later executed a painting for the Queen of Naples. In Rome, but also after his return to Vienna, he painted numerous D.
