About this work
Christ-Iselin 1920, p. 39: "[...] a picture that Sandreuter executed in the studio from a watercolor. He made the sketches for the different positions of the Roman horses at our place in Niederschönthal. It is always the same horse, even if he varied it by making a chestnut, gray, black, or piebald from it." According to Barth 1930, p. 12, Sandreuter also liked to follow troop movements with his sketchbook.
