About this work

In Frankfurt folk speech, "Das Nizza" refers to a park stocked with southern plants on the Sachsenhausen bank of the Main. Gardeners trained around Nice had laid it out. A drawing dated 1921 of the right corner building is in the Städel Museum (Inv. 16340). Beckmann had lived in Frankfurt from 1915 until his summary dismissal from his professorship at the Städelschule in 1933. In 1937, this painting was exhibited in the notorious exhibition.
