About this work
The painting is presumably the first, unfinished version of the "Abandoned Venus." The second painting version, in which Arnold Böcklin dispensed with the fountain architecture, is now lost (Andree 1998, No. 117). In its body posture, the Venus recalls the type of the Venus de' Medici. It is assumed that Böcklin may have been inspired by Joseph von Eichendorff's epic "Julian" (1853) in the depiction (Ranke 1998, pp. 75–76).
