About this work

According to the note on the old inventory card, the sculptor depicted was formerly thought to be Michelangelo. However, the sculptor and his apprentice are figure types that appear repeatedly in Toorenvliet's works. He also liked to use motif repetitions, such as the three female heads here. According to Susanne H. Karau (Life and Work of the Leiden Painter Jacob Toorenvliet (1640–1719), Diss. Free University of Berlin 2002; no. B54), the painting was created after the Italian trip and Vienna...
