About this work
As a model for the motif, Juan Gris used the painting "La rêveuse à la mandoline" (Robaut no. 1513) by Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot (1796–1875), now preserved in the Saint Louis Art Museum, Missouri. It is suspected that Josette Herpin, Gris' partner, sat as a model for him (Madrid Exhibition Catalogue 2005, vol. 1, p. 48).
