About this work
"Blue Night" belongs to the series of late pastel works in which Paul Klee reduced the colorfulness to a few basic colors. Marianne L. Teuber suspects that the signs in the image refer to the patterns that Max Wertheimer used in his essay "Investigations into the Theory of Form," published in 1923 in the journal "Psychologische Forschung," to illustrate the theories of his Gestalt psychology (Teuber 1976, p. 134 ff.).
