About this work
The study head in half-profile facing left forms the counterpart to the study head in half-profile facing right (G 2002.21). With both heads, Trautmann connects to the tradition of "tronies" in 17th-century Dutch painting. "Tronies" were studies of heads, often in exotic disguise, where the aim was less to capture portrait likeness than to depict certain characters. These were mostly practice pieces.
