About this work

In 1905, the French League for Human Rights commissioned Aristide Maillol to create a monumental sculpture as a monument to Auguste Blanqui (1805–1881), a French socialist and revolutionary who had spent many years in prison. Inspired by Blanqui's fate, an over-life-size female full-length figure emerged. She has her hands bound behind her back and strides defiantly, yet with a turned-back head.
