About this work
The painting entered the Öffentliche Kunstsammlung as "Jacob's Dream" and with the attribution to Giovanni Lanfranco. Erich Schleier rejected this attribution in 1961 during a visit to Basel (note in the painting file). In the Kunstmuseum, the picture is later (since then?) catalogued as South German, 18th century. It is not certain whether the person depicted is St. Alexius.
