About this work

In the Kunstmuseum, the portrait has been catalogued as Justus Sustermans since its acquisition. This painter, known primarily for his portraits, was among other things court painter to the Medici in Florence. Cf. the "Portrait of a Boy with a Rose" in the National Gallery in London (Inv. NG1810), which was formerly attributed to François Duchatel but is now catalogued as "Flemish School around 1660". Similarities exist especially in the depiction of faces, but also of clothing.
