About this work
The posthumous portrait bust shows the landscape painter and art dealer Samuel Birmann (1793–1847). Birmann bequeathed his artistic estate and his art collection to the Public Art Collection Basel, which built upon that of his father Peter Birmann (1758–1844). Furthermore, the Birmann Fund for the purchase of contemporary Swiss art traces its origins to him.
