About this work

Prof. Dr. Heinrich Schiess-Gemuseus (1833–1914), founder of the ophthalmological clinic in Basel, was the donor of the "Schiess Fund" in 1911 for works by Basel artists under 35 years of age and a member of the Art Commission from 1888 to 1906. The artist Traugott Schiess (1834–1869) was his brother, the painter Ernesto Schiess (1872–1919) his son, and the painter Hans Rudolf Schiess (1904–1978) his grandson.
