About this work
Maillol takes up the theme of an earlier statuette in this bronze: "Bather Adjusting Her Hair," 1898 (Femme debout se coiffant), bronze (H. 27 cm, private collection) and terracotta (H. 25 cm, Städtische Kunstsammlung Mannheim). (Exhibition Catalogue Berlin/Lausanne/Bremen et al. 1996/1997, no. 26a and b). In this statuette, both arms are bent; her left hand rests on the back of her head, while her right hand is placed above it, securing the hair knot.
