About this work
In 1927, Ernst Barlach created an honorary memorial for the victims of World War I commissioned by the city council of Güstrow Cathedral, officially known as the Güstrow Memorial, but also referred to by the additional name "Cathedral Angel." Originally, a relief figure was planned for the outer frame of the cathedral, then later for the northern side aisle. Barlach ultimately decided, as evidenced by drawings, on an angelic figure laid entirely horizontally.
