About this work
Theo van Doesburg began work on this painting in July 1923 and completed it in 1924. It was created in Paris, where the artist had been developing various architectural designs with the architect Cornelis van Eesteren since January 1923 (Ludwigshafen Exhibition Catalogue 2012, p. 32). In addition to white, black, gray, red, and blue, Van Doesburg used gold—an unusual choice for him—which is hardly recognizable today.
