About this work
James Ensor repeated in this painting a motif that he had already executed in two versions in 1880 (KB Lux Bank, Luxembourg and private collection; see Tricot 2009, Nos. 144 and 145) and varied in another painting around 1910 (Österreichische Galerie Belvedere, Vienna; see Tricot 2009, No. 453). In the Basel version, which has a lighter color palette than the earlier ones, Ensor enlarged the crop and supplemented the objects lying on the table.
