Diese Skizze war vermutlich als Untermalung für ein nicht ausgeführtes Gemälde gedacht. Das Motiv der Nymphe auf den Schultern Pans hat Arnold Böcklin dann in einem hochformatigen Gemälde ausgeführt, in dem die linke, angedeutete Figur nicht dargestellt ist (Andree 1998, Nr. 289).
