About this work
The painting on gold ground was part of a folding screen that Arnold Böcklin presumably made for his apartment or studio in Munich. The paravent also included the fragment "Painting on the Rainbow" (Kunstmuseum Basel, Inv. G 1974.42). The fragment "Idyll" was in Böcklin's studio in San Domenico near Fiesole after his death.
