About this work
The painting previously attributed to Jan van Goyen was assigned by Hans-Ulrich Beck to the Haarlem landscape painter Frans de Hulst. De Hulst is best known for his dune landscapes and river scenes with buildings, created in the manner of Van Goyen's paintings of the 1640s. Here he combined various buildings like building blocks into different compositions. The rivers are usually enlivened with barges and sailing boats.
