About this work

Left: two sparrows (house sparrows) one above the other; center: a goldfinch over a chaffinch; right: a greenfinch seen from below over a nightingale. A painting sold at Sotheby's, London (5.7.1995, lot 108; RKD Image Database, Artwork No. 3377) shows a comparable view of branches with, however, more exotic birds upon them. It was signed "jvk." and formed part of a series of the Four Elements as an Allegory of Air.
