About this work

The poor condition of the painting, covered by a strongly yellowed varnish, makes a precise assessment impossible. In the catalogue raisonné by Laurie B. Harwood, the Basel picture is treated among the uncertain attributions or copies. For the figure of the lying shepherd, she points to a related work in Nantes (Musée des Beaux-Arts, Inv. 541; ibid., No. C. 64, pl. 183), which, however, is itself more likely a copy.
