About this work

As a handwritten note on the back of the panel indicates, Carl Engel, on the left in the picture, portrayed himself here with friends. The inscription reads: "C. Engel fec / Düsseldorf"; below, on the left: "Weiss / Marinemaler"; to the right of that: "Fay." Both figures Engel likely met during his studies from 1834 to 1836 at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. Fay is probably Joseph Fay (1812–75, studied 1833–1841/42 there), while Weiss may be...
