About this work
The picture of the Apostle James probably belonged to a series of Christ and apostle representations known in Spain as "Apostolado". A complete series comprised thirteen representations. El Greco was the first artist in Spain to paint such a series. He produced several "Apostolados", two of which have survived completely. The most significant, painted around 1604, is located in the sacristy of Toledo Cathedral (Wethey 1962, Nos. 160–172). One belonging to his late work...
