About this work
Comparable depictions of elegantly dressed couples before a landscape view, with or without the figure of a page boy, occur variously in Dirck Hals's œuvre. The Basel version, affected by its condition of preservation, shows a nearly sketchy fleetingness in the painting style that goes beyond what is usual for the artist. In Nehlsen-Marten's catalogue raisonné (2003), the Basel panel is listed as either a very late work by Dirck Hals or as by an imitator from his circle.
