About this work
Companion piece to Inv. 1101. The still life is painted on the reverse of a printing plate. This is the plate for the engraving by Adriaen Collaert "Dance around the Golden Calf" after Marten de Vos (1532–1603) (H. 73/1). The printing plate bears the inscription: "Praeceptum I. / Non habebis Deos alinos coram me (1st Commandment)." The painting was formerly incorrectly signed in the lower right corner "Pe. Snyers"; this signature has now been removed.
