About this work
The inspiration for the nocturnal scene, illuminated by a candle and the Christ Child, may have been provided by the Nativity on Hans Holbein the Younger's Oberried Altarpiece (Freiburg im Breisgau, Minster, University Chapel). According to the protocol of the University of Basel dated 15 August 1797, which documents the donation of the panel by Prof.
