About this work
The Virgin is attributed by Jeanne Peipers to the Master of the High Altar of the pilgrimage church of Lautenbach in the Renchtal (Baden-Württemberg). The stylistic parallels between Madonna and Child with the figures of the altar wings are convincing. The imprint of Baldung's art, whose approximate contemporary the anonymous master identifiable in the Upper Rhine region must have been, is also evident.
