About this work
Joseph Heintz's Basel "Adoration of the Shepherds" is one of four known versions of this composition. The painter, who came from Basel, was appointed court painter to Emperor Rudolf II in 1591 and settled at his court in Prague in 1598. The present painting on copper, whose dating 1599 is now hardly visible, was undoubtedly recognizable during a microscopic examination in the museum. An auction at Haboldt & Co.
