About this work

The attribution to Matthias Withoos, previously favored by the former owner, has been definitively refuted by the rediscovery of the monogram. Furthermore, the subject matter, the finely detailed manner of painting, and the shifts in scale bordering on the surreal correspond perfectly with the conventions of the specialist known during his lifetime as "Distel-Hamilton." Another version signed "C.W.D. Hamilton," equal in quality or even superior to the Basel picture, exists in Lyon (Musée des Beaux-Arts).
