About this work
The date, likely added later given its stiffer execution and placement squeezed between the surname and branch, may be correct if Ruysch stated her age in the sense of "in her 78th year," as was quite common in the 17th and 18th centuries. According to the RKD image database, her baptismal date is known: June 3, 1664. Since her birth could not have been long before the baptism, the painting would thus have been created after her 77th birthday, i.e., rather in the second half of 1741.
