About this work
The figures in the Basel picture—a gypsy reading a peasant's hand, plus three other gypsies, one of whom has settled on the ground with a child—occur frequently in Teniers' work. They appear in mirror image, for instance, in the "Landscape with Fortune-Telling Gypsy" in Karlsruhe (Staatliche Kunsthalle, Inv. 1899), dated to the second half of the 1640s and bearing the same signature, as well as in the "Landscape with Gypsies" from the Prado.
