About this work
Van Beyeren is primarily known as a still-life painter but also painted some seascapes. In addition to sumptuous still lifes, fish still lifes belong to his oeuvre. He specialized particularly in dead fish, cut open to reveal their juicy flesh, like the red salmon slice in the Basel painting. The kitchen utensils surrounding them, however, are usually rendered in more restrained tones. Here, the brass container contrasts tensioningly with the stacked fish.
