About this work

Following a flood in the Isar valley, Stäbli discovered the motif of flooding in 1886, to which he devoted several variants in the following years. Equipped with waders and an iron easel, he painted in the middle of the flooded area (Graber 1916, pp. 54–55, 75). Exhibition catalogue Brugg 1984 shows on pages 117/118 the resulting variants and dates this picture to 1893 as the sixth picture; a seventh version went to the Neue Pinakothek in Munich.
