About this work

The model for the Basel portrait of Sebastian Brant (1458–1521), jurist, Strasbourg city clerk, and author of the "Ship of Fools," first published in Basel in 1494, is the panel of identical format in the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe (Inv. 953). This original version, originating from the old collection of the Margraves of Baden-Durlach before 1688, was identified by Ernst Buchner as a work by Hans Burgkmair the Elder and dated to 1508, when the 50-year-old Brant was staying in Augsburg (see Ern).
