About this work
The copper engraver and lithographer Julius Allgeyer (1829–1900) was closely friends with Anselm Feuerbach, whom he met in Rome at the end of 1856. With the support of Henriette Feuerbach, the artist's stepmother, he wrote the first biography of the artist. It was first published in 1894. Due to its great success, it was republished after the author's death in 1904 in an expanded and revised edition. Feuerbach had already painted a first portrait of Allgeyer in 1857.
